Discover the Atlantic coast

Discover the Atlantic coast for an unforgettable holiday in Landes region at Camping de la Rive. This region of western France is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, historical and cultural sites and delicious cuisine. Here are some ideas for exploring the coast.

Top destinations on the southern Atlantic coast : Basque Country, Landes, Gironde

One of the top destinations on the Atlantic coast is the Basque Country with its beautiful landscapes, férias, typical local culture, regional language, hiking and of course surfing and water sports. Discover the town of Biarritz, a pretty seaside resort known for its beaches, its legendary surfing waves, its fishing port, and its old town.

Saint Jean de Luz is also a pretty Basque town between the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains. With its historic centre, fishing port, beaches and wild coastline, Saint de Luz is well worth a visit to immerse yourself in the Basque culture and landscape.

Near Saint Jean de Luz, you can also discover the Rhune. The mythical mountain of the Basque Country can be climbed on foot or by train. At the top of its 1200 metres of altitude, discover a magnificent 360° panorama with a view of the French and Spanish coasts and the Pyrenees mountain range. For the more sporty, go for a hike to the top of the Rhune or if you prefer a gentler walk, take a stroll along the seafront.

Landes : surf beaches and pine forests

Discovering the Atlantic coast means enjoying the Landes region with its immense sandy beaches, its mythical pine forests, its Landes culture and its local festivals. The Landes is 106 kilometres of fine sandy beaches and numerous seaside resorts such as Biscarrosse, Mimizan, Cap Breton, Hossegor, etc.

In addition to the ocean, the Landes is the region of the great lakes of southwest France. You will be able to swim in peace and quiet far from the big waves of the ocean, while practising nautical activities such as paddle, kayak, or of course lazing in the shade of the pines. Many lakes are available to you with different atmospheres.

The Great Lakes Region of New Aquitaine

The Great Lakes region of New Aquitaine is located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. It is made up of a series of freshwater lakes between the Landes and the Gironde:

  • The lake of Biscarrosse, surrounded by pine forests, offers an ideal natural setting for water sports activities such as swimming, sailing, canoeing and fishing. The fine sandy beaches are ideal for relaxation and idleness. It is also the starting point for many walks and bike rides.
  • The lake of Sanguinet, with its crystal clear waters, is ideal for swimming, sailing, water skiing and fishing. The fine sandy beaches are surrounded by pine forests, providing an ideal natural setting for relaxation and outdoor activities. The hiking trails around the lake are also popular for family walks.
  • The lake of Hossegor is a marine lake. It is connected to the ocean by a canal and offers calm waters for water sports. The shores of the lake are lined with Basque-style villas and restaurants serving local cuisine. Cycling and hiking trails also offer panoramic views of the lake and its surroundings.
  • Lake Arjuzanx is known as a stopover for the grey cranes that come to winter in the autumn. It is, in fact, a favourite place for birdwatchers. Every year, thousands of grey cranes stop here on their migration route between autumn and spring.

On foot, by bike or by boat, the Arcachon bay is a pleasant destination for a family outing.

The highest sand dune in Europe, the Dune du Pilat is a must-see destination and offers a breathtaking landscape with views of the Landes forests and the Atlantic Ocean. In any season, the Dune du Pilat is worth a visit, with family, friends or lovers.

During the day or at sunset, come and enjoy the view of this unique and preserved place. The Gironde is also known for the city of Bordeaux and its vineyards which make the reputation of the Aquitaine region.
